War fortress, Largest canon Jai Van, Weapon Museum

`

Jaigarh Fort , one of the historical monuments and major tourist attractions in Jaipur, was originally built by the Meena tribe and later captured by Kachhwaha Rajputs, and is known for housing the world’s largest canon, fired only once in its lifetime. Jaigarh Fort stands to the south of Amber Fort. High up on the western crags is Kuntalgarh, built more than a thousand years ago, belonging to the Minas who ruled the region before the Rajput kings. This fort was strategically built to give advantageous height to the archers to target easily & hit badly the enemies. It is said that Raja Man Singh incinerated great treasures here. Located north of Jaipur , Jaigarh Fort is structurally similar to Amber Fort. Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur is marked with the crenellated rampart wall with several courtyards, one after the other. No fort of Jaipur ever witnessed any fighting either inside or outside it. This is why the architecture of the forts remained intact and only onslaughts of weather affected them a little. The walls of the fort without any exception are so massive and so designed that they even now impress an observer in the same manner as those were meant originally to impress the enemy with their imposing and formidable aspect. Jaigarh Fort expresses the power and affluence of the rulers responsible for its construction. The walls, invariably, are of great thickness and height, strengthened sometimes at short intervals, by massive towers and the gateways of no less imposing appearance than the walls. The fort possesses the decorative ornament of the defences, such as arches, corbels and lintels, carved in rich elaborates designs and the parapets cut in ornamental shapes.

Among the attractions of Jaigarh Fort are three-story water storage tanks, a museum, Jaivan, temples and breathtaking views of the city. Located 15 km from Jaipur city, Jaigarh Fort is situated 400 feet above the Amber Fort on the Cheel ka Teela (Eagles' Hill). With two entrances, Dungar Darwaza (in south direction) and Avani Darwaza (in east direction) and spread over 3 sq km area, Jaigarh Fort is home to a developed water harvesting system, indigenous to Rajasthan. The Sagar Pond within the fort has a proper arrangement to collect water. The fort was constructed for the purpose of serving the army. At the highest point of the fort is the Dia Burj, which is situated on about seven storeys. From Dia Burj one gets a panoramic view of the whole city.

The fort also houses Jai Van-the largest canon in Asia, said to be fired only once. The Jaivan is mounted at Dungari Darwaza of the fort. The weight of the cannon is 50 tons. The length of the barrel of Jai Van is 8 meter. It is the most famous cannon among the canons found worldwide. Its size can be gauged by the fact that its shell created a huge crater which later turned into a pond in a village 35 km from the city. Even today, this pond exists and is quenching the thirst of the people of the Chaksu village. To fire Jaivan to hit a target at 35 km distance, 100 kg gun powder was needed. Due to its excessive weight, it was not taken out of the fort nor was it ever used in a battle.

Jaigarh Fort houses a small but well-kept museum, dedicated to displaying the armories of the Rajput soldiers. It also includes swords, shields, guns and oysters. The museum displays photographs, postage stamps etc from the ancient times.

Jaigarh Fort is a very strong fort with huge thick walls made of red sandstones. The fort has several palaces and courtrooms. Dungar Darwaza is the main entrance to the fort. The fort complex has two temples, one is the 10th century Ram Harihar Temple and another is the 12th century Kaal Bhairav Temple.
