Festivals of Delhi

Diwali, the festival of lights, is the event of the year. The city twinkles with oil lamps, lit to show Lord Rama the way home from exile, and festive meals and gifts are produced.

Also prominent on the festive calendar is Holi, an adrenalin- pumping festival known for the mischievous pelting of 'gulal' (coloured powder) and water. Holi celebrates the advent of spring and the death of the demoness Holika in late February or early March. It's a celebration of joy and hope.Ritualistic bonfires are lit (Holika Dahan) on the eve of the first day.

In a different sphere, 26th January 1950 is one of the most important days in Indian history. The constitution of India came into force on this day and country became a republic, realizing the dreams of Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought for independence. Republic Day is celebrated each year with solemn pomp and pageantry, culminating with a spectacular military procession known as the Beating of the Retreat and a cultural extravaganza, in which every state performs its traditional music and dance.
