On the Assi ghat, the temple of Lakshmi Narayana rises on a platform dominating the stairs. It is easily recognized by its main shikhara surrounded by four small secondary shikhara, according to a classic north Indian temple architectural structure known as Panchayatana. The sanctum sanctorum, unusually hexagonal, contains a statue of eight metals (Ashtadhatu) representing Lakshmi & Narayana - Lord Vishnu and his consort Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and prosperity. In the smaller shrines at various corners contain idols of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, accompanied by Lord Ganesh, elephant headed deity. Also idols of Lord Krishna (divine incarnation of Vishnu) and Radha are also placed therein. Lingam as a symbol of Lord Shiva’s creative powers is also installed here. Beautiful paintings of divinities decorate the pediment of each shrine.
