Omkareshwar is situated 77 km away from Indore. Its ancient name was Mandhata which is described in the religious scriptures. It is included in the 12 Jyotrlingas of India. Located on Mandhata Island, next to the banks of Narmada River, Omkareshwar is a famous pilgrimage center which is one of 12 idolized holy places Jyotirlinga of Shiva. The name Omkareshwar means 'Lord of Omkaara', which is one of the Dwadasha Jyotirlinga of the Holy Places or the 12 Holy Places dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of a Jyotirlingam. It is a sacred island that is shaped like the Hindu symbol 'OM' (ॐ). Omkareshwar attracts of millions of travelers from all over the world. It has two ancient holy places including Omkareshwar and Amarkareshwar. This holy place is located on the meeting point of Narmada and the Kaveri River, making a must-see pilgrimage destination for Lord Shiva devotees and leisure travelers alike. Set in the Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh, Omkareshwar is forged by the Narmada Sacred River. Built in the Nagara style, the Omkareshwar temple is represented by eminent Shikhara.

According to the myth, when Narad, the great prophet visited God of Vindhya Mountains, it was quite raging after the knowledge that there was no lodging for Lord Shiva and so, God of these mountains suggested the isolated place . Lord Shiva was very pleased when the deity of the mountain said that he would make Omkareshwar one of his houses and that is why the place is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Over, the entire area of this holy place is bordered by mountains, making an enchanting view for travelers. If you are here you have to take a Parikrama around the island as it is considered to be very religious and you will feel relax and peace here.
