Howrah Bridge

Officially named Rabindra Setu, the Howrah Bridge was built in 1943 to facilitate military transport between Kolkata and the neighboring town of Howrah. Today it is the main gateway to Kolkata. The bridge is 450 meters long on a single arch and is an engineering wonder. It can lengthen by more than one meter during the hot summer heat. More than 50,000 vehicles and 2 million people pass through it every day. Do not forget that in India bridges are considered strategic military locations and that it is strictly forbidden to take pictures of them.

One of the most magnificent bridges in the world, this awesome steel structure built according to the cantilever principle with a single span, links Howrah and Kolkata. Its tower rises to 280 feet above the road level and measures 2,150 feet in length. The bridge has width enough (71 feet) for eight lines of vehicular traffic, including two tramways. There are footpaths on both the sides. This bridge replaced an old pontoon bridge in 1943.
