How to Reach Kolkata

Kolkata, presently capital city of West Bengal, was capital of British India till 1911 AD. To Reach Kolkata by Train: There are two main railheads in Kolkata – Howrah & Sealdah. Kolkata’s Howrah Station — teeming with humanity — is the terminal of time-honored trains, crisscrossing the length & breadth of India and connecting all major cities of the country.

To Reach Kolkata by Road: Kolkata is well-connected with all major cities in India by motor-able world-class road network. India’s historic highway, the Grand Trunk Road, connects Delhi with Kolkata (1516 km). The road distance between Mumbai and Kolkata is nearly 2,060 km; Kolkata and Chennai is 1690 km away. Puri (495 km) and Darjeeling (620 km) can easily be reached from Kolkata.

Local Transportation: If in a hurry, go by taxi - rates are economical. Small taxis are somewhat cheaper. Drivers are not used to tipping but a small extra will be welcome. Auto rickshaws are very popular and mostly shared by co-passengers. It is the cheapest and convenient means for city commuting. For leisurely sightseeing hire a rickshaw. Kolkata is the place where the wiry rickshaw wallahs opposed the introduction of cycles so do not have qualms about hiring them. Agree on fare beforehand and tip generously. Municipal buses and streetcars are cheap but overcrowded to the point of extreme discomfort.
