As Varanasi (Kashi) is called Shiv Nagri (City of Lord Shiva), similarly Prayagraj is known as Vishnu Nagari (City of Lord Vishnu). The historical and religious importance of Prayagraj can be understood from Hindu scriptures like Padma Purana, Varaha Puran, Matsya Purana, Skand Purana, Ramayana, Mahabharat etc. Prayag Mahatmya Shatadhyayi (प्रयाग महात्म्य शताध्यायी) explains a lot about religious significance of Prayagraj and gives descriptions of Shri Veni Madhav, the main deity of Prayagraj, having taken position in as many as twelve forms in various directions to protect pilgrims from evil forces. As per the Puranas, Veni Madhav (वेणी माधव) does not expect anything from pilgrims. He is pleased at their stay in Prayagraj during the auspicious month of Magh (माघ). Veni Madhav is an inexhaustible treasure of the four Purusharthas which on being pleased the deity grants to the devotees and pilgrims. Lord Vishnu, along with Indra and other gods, protects Prayagraj. In child form, Vishnu sleeps on the leaves of Akshayavat, protected by Lord Shiva. Such is the glory of the Prayag Kshetra as extolled by the holy Hindu scriptures. Veni Madhav is exactly at the confluence in his Chaturbhuja form holding ‘shankh’ (conchshell), ‘chakra’ (wheel), ‘gada’ (mace) and Kamal (lotus).

Veni Madhav Temple, also called Lakshmi Narayan Temple, is located on the banks of the Ganga in Daraganj locality of Prayagraj. The temple enshrines black stone idols of Radha Krishna. Lord Vishnu along with his consort Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped here. It is said that without having ‘darshan’ of Veni Madhav, the virtues accruing from holy dip in the Ganga remain incomplete. It attracts a lot of pilgrims throughout the year and remains the most crowed during Kumbh Mela and Magh Mela. In this temple, great Vaishnav saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu from Bengal used to perform ‘sankirtan’ and dance in devotion.

The temples of other forms of Veni Madhav are located in different directions in Prayagraj. First of the twelve forms of Madhav, Shri Adi Vat Madhav is termed as the Mool Madhav (original Madhav) & the temple is located to the right side of the Akshayavat which is also venerated as the Vaishnav Peeth. The Akshayavat is venerated as Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Shri Asi Madhav Temple is located at Ishankon within the premises of Nag Vasuki Temple. Shri Sankasht Har Madhav Temple is in Jhusi (earlier called Pratishthanpur) on eastern bank of the Ganga underneath the Sandhya Vat. Shri Shankh Madhav Temple is located in Chhatanag. Shri Adi Veni Madhav Temple is located at Arail Ghat. Sri Chakra Madhav Temple is located at Arail Ghat, in the direction of Agnikona (south-east) of Akshayavat. Shri Gada Madhav Temple in Chhivanki village is located to the south of Akshayavat. Shri Padma Madhav Temple is located in the direction of Nairityakona (south-west) in Bikar Devariya. Shri Manohar Madhav Temple is located towards north in Johnsonganj locality in Prayagraj city. Shri Vindu Madhav Temple is located in Vayavyakona (North - West) on Draupadi Ghat. Shri Anant Madhav Temple is located in Ordinance Depot Factory, to the north of Akshayavat. Legend goes that even in the great deluge this Akshayavat and Vaishnav Peeth survive. Shakta, Shaiva, Saur (related to the Sun) and Ganapatya (related to Lord Ganesh) peethas also are located here.
