During British rule in India, the area around this church was inhabited by British and Anglo- Indian community. They demanded a place of worship for them. Since they were Christian, a church, called Christ Church, was built here in Neo-Gothic architectural style. Christ Church in Shimla , the second oldest church in northern India (the oldest is in Ambala), the Christ Church, overlooking The Ridge, was built between 1846 and 1857.

The clocks were added three years later, but none of them now work. One of Shimla's major landmarks, the church is also renowned for its stained glass windows. You can discreetly have a look inside the church, or attend English-language services every Sunday during the tourist season. The attractive yellow building of the church, one of the heritage monuments in Shimla, can be seen from far-off. The splendid architectural beauty & historical significance, make it a prominent tourist attraction of Shimla for a curious vacationer. The church is located at most prominent road of the Shimla, thus, accessible to all the tourists. It costed approx INR 50,000 in construction. At one time, 574 people can sit in the church and there is provision to increase the sitting up to 630 people. If you get a chance to go in Shima, have a visit to the place. During Easter & Chritmas it is beautifully decorated and mid-night mass is held here.
