Pushkar Lake, located in the midst of rocky hills, is one of the most sacred Hindu places of pilgrimage, mentioned in the Ramayana and the Mahahharata. It is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Pushkar, Rajasthan. Vast crowds of devout Hindus assemble yearly at the autumn fair to bathe in Pushkar Lake’s holy waters. According to sacred scripts, Brahma - first of the Hindu Trinity—on passing this place one day let slip from His hand a lotus flower. Water sprang forth immediately from the spot where the petals fell. The lake was formed; it was called Pushkar, which means lotus. The pilgrims visit the lake almost every day. Brahmin priests abound who offer their services to the pilgrims. But the most important season is October-November when a great fair (called Pushkar Mela / Pushkar Fair) is held in which a hundred thousand pilgrims take part and bathe in the sacred waters of the lake. In Pushkar Fair, pilgrims & foreign tourists watch camel riders showing their speed and feats of maneuverability, folk dance performances and cultural activities.
Many are the temples that surround the holy lake; one of them is dedicated to Lord Brahma. Curious to relate, there are only a few of these in all India. Brahma Temple in Pushkar is one of the few of its kind in India dedicated to this divinity of the Hindu Trinity. As temples to Brahma are rare, this shrine is especially important and attracts innumerable pilgrims from all over India. Brahma Temple in Pushkar is a fine big temple richly built of marble, situated on the summit of a mound overlooking the lake where Lord Brahma is regularly worshipped. It stands in a small courtyard, surrounded by buildings in which live the priests. In front of the temple are two marble elephants and a few well-executed statues.
The town contains several fine temples dedicated to Savitri, Gayatri, Badri Narayan, Varaha and Shiva Atmateshvara. Though many of them are all of modern construction but they deserve a visit to observe religious practices of the devotees.
