Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai, is a tomb cum mosque of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. It is located islet coast of Worli in southern-most part of Mumbai. Dargah was constructed in 1431 in the memory of Hazi Ali. Haji Ali was a sufi saint from Uzbekistan. Hazi Ali was a merchant who gave up his luxury life before the pilgrimage to Mecca. Starting his travel from Bukhara, he ended it in Mumbai. After settling in Mumbai he used to spread the novel wisdom of Islam to the people who regularly visited him. He had a wish that he didn’t want to be buried at some proper place or in graveyard. He said his followers to leave his shroud in the ocean, and where it will be stop he should be buried at that place. His followers obeyed his wish and hence ‘dargah’ was built in the middle of Arabian Sea where the shroud stopped near a small mound of rocks.

Dargah is spread over an area of 4500 square meters and was constructed in Indo Islamic architecture style. A central mosque is situated in the middle of a courtyard. The tomb in the mosque is covered by a brocaded red and green sheet. Pillars of main hall are decorated with mirrors of blue, yellow and green color. This decoration represents the ninety nine names of Allah. There are separate rooms for prayer for ladies and gents. Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan and Bhumata Brigade launched a movement for the right of pray for women. In 2016 the Mumbai High Court has given its judgement that women can enter the Dargah to pray.

Dargah was upgraded many times in terms of structure. The recent renovation was in 2008 AD in which the Dargah was modified using marble of Makrana, Rajasthan. Along with being one of the tourist attractions in Mumbai, it is a pilgrimage site for the Muslims. On Thursday and Friday, it is visited by a large number of pilgrims. Famous Bollywood song “Piya Hazi Ali” is filmed in Hazi Ali Dargah itself.
