Kullu, one of the breathtaking places of Himachal Pradesh, is also called as Valley of Gods. Kullu Dussehra is a mega cultural & religious event of international fame. Colorful Kullu Dussehra festival is usually celebrated in the month of October. In 1972, Kullu Dessehra was declared as an International Event. Kullu Dussehra festival is attended not only by the people from Himachal Pradesh but also from across India and globe. Around 4 to 5 Lac people come from far-off places to celebrate the festival and make it a mega festival. The festival is celebrated in memory of the triumph of Lord Rama over Ravana, an evil demon. Kullu Dussehra is celebrated on the tenth day of the Navratri called “Vijay Dashmi”. The festival is celebrated seven days long and has become grand celebration because of the gathering of large gathering of devotees, onlookers, participants, spectators, visitors & tourists. The idol Lord Raghunath along with other deities is taken out in the form of a religious procession throughout the town on a chariot (Ratha). It is popularly called as Ratha Yatra.

There are various myths, legends and stories behind the celebration of the festival. Among the most popular legend is related to Sage Jamdagni. On that day, Maharishi Jamdagni was returning from Mount Kailash with images of eighteen different gods which scattered towards Kullu because of a storm. That is why people celebrate this festival with great pomp and worship these images of God on the day. As per another popular legend, Raja Jagat Singh had installed an idol of Lord Raghunath on his throne and declared Lord Raghunath as the deity of the valley. That is why people celebrate this festival with a grand celebration. The soothing beauty of the place along with the celebration attracts visitors from far to come and to enjoy the day with happiness and great pomp and shows. Thousands of people from all over the country as well as across the world come to celebrate the festival as well as enjoy the pleasant beauty of the place. Kullu Dessehra will be celebrated in 2019 on October 19.
