90 km from Trivandrum, this ancient town girdled by inland waterways, is within easy reach of the capital of Kerala. Kollam, also known as Quilon or Desinganadu, is an old harbor town located on the Arabian Sea coast and stands on Ashtamudi Lake in Kerala. It is the cashew processing center and the fishing industry center. This place has been a trading port of prosperity for centuries. The surrounding area produces pepper, coconut, cashew nuts and other agricultural products.

The name 'Kollam' is taken from the Sanskrit word Kollam which means pepper. It is estimated that the city’s present area was built by Sapir Iso, a Syrian merchant during the 9th century. It is estimated that the first foreign community to settle in Kollam was Chinese and in the past era this place was famous for its palaces and known as the Palace City. The area has some interesting historical remains and temples, having the traditional ornate style of architecture.
