The Thar Heritage Museum in Jaisalmer is a private museum, located in the midst of the city, a living land of culture, architecture, history & all things gorgeous. The museum is a brainchild of Mr LN Khatri. The man himself was a student of history and folklorist in his time. He collected everything that caught his eyes and touched his heart, and put together a beautiful museum for the world to see. The rooms in this private museum are full of musical instruments, fossils, manuscripts and turbans. The museum is a standing example showcasing the culture and traditions of Rajasthan. Though, Thar Heritage Museum is small in size but it brings forward Jaisalmer’s records in the shape of artefacts, coins and images of the royal families. Something which is often talked about and remembered by all is the loving hospitality of the owner himself, and how he takes you around his precious collections and shares his stories and tales with all. Every artifact and piece of collection is meticulously verified. It becomes all the more charming with narration of a personal story with those historical articles. The museum in Jaisalmer has a beautiful collection of old photographs, some from the time the Royal families resided in the city, showcasing their lifestyle, their vintage cars. Few photos of later duration shed light on the various aspects of the fort and the buildings of that time. It’s amazing to see the stark difference in the fort from then and now. A visit to Thar Museum takes a traveler back in time. Do look around for the ‘Snakes & Ladders’ which is a recreation at this museum and is said to be a teaching guide to the Hinduism & its spiritual journey. It is something that will surely make a visitor ponder and contemplate for hours to come.

A quaint puppet show also takes place in the evening that allows a visitor to feel spirit of the Rajasthani culture. The show ends beautifully with a narration from Mr Khatri. Sometimes the doors of the museum are found locked. In that case, Mr Khatri can be found on his handicraft shop ‘Desert Handicrafts’. The shop is adjacent to the museum. He would be more than happy to take one to his stunning museum. His handicraft store also has some amazing collections of things like vintage stamps with Urdu inscriptions, small spoons from the older times and centuries old little things. Many visitors buy few interesting goods from his shop and take back as a souvenir and a memoir of the Rajasthani essence. Though the Thar Heritage Museum is a bit away from city center but it’s worth it a visit. It turns out to be a history haven and truly makes one time travel into another era. What better way than to spend few hours in a room full of things old & gold. In order to explore early history of Jaisalmer, the Thar Museum may be an interesting stoppage.
