Ashramas are abode of Hindu saints and sages. They not only reside here but also meditate, study, teach the students, preach the followers, research about worldly and divine dynamics, and practice religious rituals. Sapt Rishi Ashram is one of them. Legendry Sapt Rishi Ashram is one of the most famous ashrams in Haridwar. It is located on the banks of Ganga River at the Sapt Sarovar in Haridwar. The ashram was established in 1943 by Goswami Guru Dutt. Like other religious places, Sapt Rishi Ashram has a story associated with it. It is believed, as per the Hindu mythology, that there were seven sages who used to meditate on the banks of river Ganga. These great sages were Vashishth, Kashyap, Atri, Vishwamitra, Gautam, Bharadwaja, and Jamadagni. Their meditation was continuously disturbed by the sound of speedily gushing water of the river. To lower the sound of the river to avoid disturbance in meditation, the Rishis (sages) trapped the flow of River Ganga and, as a result, the holy river split her flow in seven different streams. It resulted into significantly reduced noise. All these seven streams of River Ganga are called as the Sapt Sarovar. The place where Sapt Rishi (the seven sages) meditated is called the Saptrishi Ashram. Further ahead from this point, all the seven streams unite amongst themselves. Also, the Pandava brothers on their way to the heaven, passed through this place. There are 5 statues on the banks of the river for the Pandavas. There is an old dilapidated building near the ashram which is utilized by the pilgrims as a resting place before trekking higher into the hills.

Though the ashram is old, still it is well maintained one with all the accommodation facilities. It has several rooms for the staying purpose. The complex of the ashram has a Sanskrit school and a residential hostel for the poor children. Religious activities like Bhajans and Aartis are conducted on regular basis. Along with all these things, meditation and yoga classes are held here for the people. This place can be considered as the retreat for the yoga lovers. The Sapt Rishi Ashram also attracts many of the sages, saints, ‘rishis’, and priests from all parts of the world. The people, once stayed in and participated in various social, cultural, religious and spiritual activities of the ashrama, describe it a life-changing experience. The ashram also has a place for worshipping Sapt Rishi.

People also come here to seek peaceful times and solace. This is a great place to shed the stress of the regular life. Staying at the Sapt Rishi ashram & actively participating in various soul searching and societal activities transforms the lives and minds of the people. The ambiance of the ashram is soothing and great for seeking rejuvenation. The people who visit this ashram take a dip into holy water of river Ganga, flowing nearby the ‘ashrama’. The ashram holds a very special place in the lives of the devotees. Normally the devotees come here for a longer duration to contribute to the outer world by deepening & enriching their inwardly journey but, even if they cannot come to stay here for a good period of time, they visit the ashram to seek tranquillity for some time.

Sapt Rishi Ashram is at a distance of 6.5 km from Haridwar Railway Junction (Station) and 5 km from Har Ki Pauri. It hardly takes 15 minutes from Har ki Pauri to reach the ashram. It is specifically located in Motichur, on the banks of River Ganga. It is right next to the Bharat Mata Mandir. Not more than an hour will be needed to explore the ashram. Through the medium of taxis and the buses, one can reach the ashram. The entry inside the sshram is totally free but the pets are not allowed to take in. The ashram is open on all days from Sunday to Saturday every week. It is also open on all the public holidays too. The timing of the ashram is from 8.30 am to 6 pm. One must visit the ashram to escape the hustle-bustle of the city life and meditate for some time in peaceful vibes.
