Edward Lear wrote in the early seventies of the last century: "Madras at 7; very forlorn and benighted railway station reception. . . The drive along the sea, dimly seen afar by half moonlight, seemed endless." Marina, the promenade along the sea would still look endless though you would be driving in an automobile while Lear had used a carriage. This is the second largest and one of the loveliest beaches in the world. The sandy expanse between the promenade and the sea becomes dotted with people in the evening. The sea is a bit rough and people bathe here dressed. The sea is really good and Marina beach remains animated with frolic and funfair-like environment with majority of Indian revelers. Sellers of popcorn, cotton candy, mango etc can be spotted easily.

Marina Beach in Tamil Nadu is in Bay of Bengal. The beach is a continuation of the coast of Taj Coromandel and goes to Besant Nagar, where Elliot beach begins. The beach stretches for about 13 kilometers. Marina beach is the longest beach in India. People in the morning go to Marina beach for jogging, walk and exercise while in the evening go for fun and sports. In the morning, a large cache of people one can seen running along the road, walking, and young children learning to swim in two huge pools called the "Marina" and "Anna" pools. The sunset view of Marina Beach is amazing. Families and young boys come in the early afternoon. Usually boys come to play cricket. The games close at night because there is no light. People, who love peace, sound of sea waves and natural climate, come late in the afternoon and stay even after sunset. While one walks along the Marina beach and look towards the city, the building in vision gives a feel of a former British colony because all those buildings look like traditional British buildings.

In order to prevent any untoward incident, the police continually makes rounds and rarely does any incident occur. Also, authorities concerned with upkeep of the beach, fine people for littering, spitting or messing up the beach. The Marina beach was completely destroyed by the tsunami of December 26, 2004 but has again been brought into previous condition by the civic bodies. Swimming is prohibited in the Marina beach because of the many accidents that have occurred due to unpredictable currents. For those who love seafood, it will be wonderful to explore food stalls that offer fresh seafood. One can also eat icecream, have tea and the potatoes that are sold along the way. Then, at a particular place, one can find several stores selling articles, ornaments and all kinds of things made of conches & shells. Nearby Marina beach, accommodation in the form luxury to budget hotels can be booked. Visit Marina beach of Chennai for amazing experience.
