Surkhanda Devi temple is situated near Mussoorie and is a true paradise for trekkers. Though the climb is a rugged one, but the sights that you behold on the way are mesmerizing. The temple is dedicated to the Goddess Shakti and is very popular among Hindus. To reach the temple there is a 2 km trek uphill from Kaddukhal which can be reached by road from Chamba. As the people of the region believe, it was the place where Lord Shiva had put Parvati’s dead body for some time bringing it from Haridwar. Hence the Surkhanda Devi Temple is called by local people as Sati Temple. The temple is located at the highest point of the Kanatal, a lake at 10000 ft above sea level. There are two other temples at short distances- Chndrabadni Temple and Kunjapuri Temple. These two temples are also dedicated to Goddess Parvati. The faithful visit the three temples as a part of Devi Darshan Triangle. Ganga Dussehra is the most gaily celebrated famous festival in the temple. In order to reach these temples, one has to pass through and climb rugged trek of several kilometers. The scenic natural Himalayan beauty around the trek makes trekking all the more a pleasant and refreshing experience.
