Supposed to have been built by Siddis, Abyssinian slaves forming the cavalry of Sultan Ahmed Shah, Sidi Saiyyed mosque has wonderful perforated latticed stone windows. Stone has been almost transformed into filigree. The delicate stone-screens in the windows—particularly the one showing a tree and its artistically spread out branches in arabesque gracefully, are unique examples of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Wooden replicas of these marvels are kept in the museum at New York and Kensington. Visit the Sidi Saiyyed Mosque to admire the Indo-Muslim architectural style illustrated by the delicate marble arabesques. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque is one of the best known in the city, built in 1573 by Sidi Saiyyed, and entirely vaulted, it is adorned with 10 jalis (windows) on the lateral and rear arches. The walls are covered with square stone panels pierced with geometric designs. The two bays along the central aisle have reticulated stone panels carved into intertwined trees, foliage and palm trees. This carved stone window is called Sidi Saiyyed Jali. The Sidi Siyyed mosque was built in the same year when Sultanate rule in Gujarat ceased to exist. The Sidi Saiyyed mosque is small in size. Built in 1573, it is marked by superb jali (openwork marble windows). The A jail that represents a tree of life is a perfect work of art.
