How to Reach Abhaneri

Abhaneri is known for its archaeologically significant monuments. Abhaneri is a small typical village of Rajasthan but with great historical lineage. Abhaner lies in Dausa district of Rajasthan and located 95 km from Jaipur and is conveniently reachable. Many Golden Triangle Tour itineraries incorporate visit to Abhaneri. Abhaneri used to be capital of Gurjar kings and most of its present temples and ‘baoris’ were built by King Chand during 10th century. Abhaneri's erstwhile name was Abha Nagri which means "a city of brightness", but over a long period of time its original name in pronunciation got distorted and people kept calling it Abhaneri. Over time, not just its name but its importance also faded. Even if Abhaneri does not give you the opportunity to visit the forts and grandiose monuments like those of Jaipur, but the options to explore will always be more in the small and little known areas. Among the notable architectural and archaeological constructions are Chand Baori (a stepwell) and several temples of 10th century. Chand Baori, named after King Chand, is a famous attraction of Abhaneri. This vast and impressive reservoir is circumscribed by a flight of stone-steps on its three sides. An amazing feature of the baori is that its depth can plunge a seven-story building. This still surviving stepwell unfolds various aspects of the then prevailing styles of architecture and sculpture. Facing the Chand Baori Chand is the Harshat Mata Temple which also belongs to the same period. Its presence near the baori shows the religious significance of the water tank too. It is a place of worship for locals and daily prayers are offered here. The Archaeological Survey of India has excavated several important links with the pages of history, which are today preserved in the museums and archaeological galleries of Rajasthan.
