Mahabalipuram Sightseeing – Chennai – Departure
After breakfast in the hotel, proceed on for exploring major highlights & tourist attractions in Mahabalipuram. Mahabalipuram is known for its monolithic rock-cut temples, rock-cut cave temples and stone built shore temple. Panch Rathas – named after the five characters of Mahabharata Arjun, Nakul Sahdev, Bhim, Dharmaraj Yudhistir & Draupadi - are fabulous examples of monolithic rock-cut temples. The cave temples are modest shrines with a mandapam or pillared hall in front and a single or a series of cells on the rear wall. Varaha cave temple , Mahisasuramardini cave temple and Adivaraha cave temple show significant elaboration in sculptural treatment. The sculpture in these cave temples are essentially figural and bespeak the tolerance of the king. As decoration, these sculptures are narrative panels most often. The cave temples record the Gods and Goddess of the time. Home to world’s largest open-air rock relief, Mahabalipuram offers opportunities to witness finesse of sculptural skill set of the artisans & stone-smiths 2000 years ago.
In addition to visiting famous sanctuaries, visit Krishna’s Ball & Crocodile Bank. Late afternoon / early evening, as per your departure schedule, you will be driven back to Chennai. On arrival at Chennai, you will be transferred directly to Chennai airport / railway station to board flight / train for your onward journey.
