Banarasi Bagh

Banarasi Bagh, a fine garden, houses the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII) Zoo of Lucknow which was founded in 1921. An admixture of menagerie and a zoological garden also it has a rich serpentarium. Besides, quite a few species of representative Indian animals can be found here.

Within the same compound stands an imposing building housing Lucknow State Museum. It is not only the oldest Museum of the State, but also one of the richest in India, to be surpassed only by the Natiotial Museum of Delhi in the northern India. It houses fascinating collection of Gupta and specially rich Kushana period coins and other objects of art. Natural History section has a long gallery of dioramas. It’s a must see destination for all visitors to Lucknow.

In the back yard of the Museum building (near the staff cycle/ scooter stand) one comes across an unusual view larger than life-size sculptures of white marble of the English statesmen and monarchs who ruled India for nearly two hundred years. Obviously, hurriedly removed and stored here, immediately after Independence, they were replaced by the statues of Indian national leaders.
